Just some basic tips for outdoor and backpacking gear. If you are looking to prolong the life of your gear (or avoid paying repair fees on your rental!), then read and follow these basic points:
1. Map of the area
2. Compass - And the knowledge of how to use it, see our compass classes
3. Light source like a flashlight or headlamp
4. Extra food
5. Extra clothing layer
6. Eye protection
7. First Aid Kit
To save space, pack small items inside larger ones. Maybe your fuel, stove, eating utensils and wash rag go inside your cooking pot. A sleeping shirt inside your sleeping bag, etc.
External frames by design sit up high and further off your back then internals so they require a different approach. Rarely will everything fit inside the bag so typically lighter, bulkier items like sleeping bags and pads may have to be tied on outside.
