Arizona Hiking Shack
Arizona Hiking Shack was founded in 1972; we had humble beginnings in a 10' x 20' Miners line shack in the deserts of Phoenix Arizona. Our mission was then as it is now: provide hikers, climbers and cavers with a reliable and knowledgeable source of equipment and training.
Since our humble beginnings, "The Shack" has grown in to a full service retail outlet for all of your outdoor needs. Come browse the store, talk with our expert staff, and get the gear that is right for your next adventure.
We measure our success by the confidence our customers have in us, by seeing them return again and again.

All of the trails listed on Arizona Hiking Trails are ones that we have hiked ourselves, and the trail descriptions are based on our hiking experiences. We also have a short listing of trails that we have hiked outside of Arizona.
Naked in the Woods - A Journal of Adventures is a travelogue of our outdoor excursions, whether it's on the trail or on the road. Come and share some of our adventures!

AZ Adventurer
My name is Brent and I am the AZ Adventurer. Whether it is descending canyons, climbing up cliff faces, hiking into the wilderness, or just getting outdoors I am always up for an adventure. I would have to say though that canyoneering is by far my most favorite thing to do. For those that don't know what canyoneering is, it is a combination of rappelling, hiking, climbing, route-finding, swimming, wading, navigating, rock scrambling, rock hopping, problem solving, and sometimes even a little backpacking. It has so many disciplines in one sport it's hard to not get enough!
Big Agnes
Wonder why we called our company Big Agnes? The answer you receive depends on who you talk with and the mood we're in.
Honestly, it's either a rocky peak in the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area outside Steamboat Springs, a laid back mountain town mama or dependable backcountry gear. We think it represents a little bit of each and everything in between.
We've spent a lot of time in the local backcountry so we feel downright connected to it. We name our products after local history, places, peaks and rivers which is always a fun process. It brings back memories of trips both successful and epic and hopefully inspires you to come explore.
From the Cross Mountain, named after a Yampa River canyon known for classic Class IV/V whitewater to the Encampment, one of the country's most scenic wilderness river runs, to more obvious names like the Divide Series, we think ours are some of the funkiest product names around.
Right in our backyard, Two Track trail is where we run and ride all summer. The spring runoff around here is pretty spectacular so we couldn't resist including a couple of our favorite creeks like Sarvis, Deep, Mad and Lost Dog. Drive up Seedhouse road past Hinman park to the trailhead for Mt. Zirkel, the highest peak around, or hang a left to Mica Basin and camp by the lake or hike towards Big Agnes and over to Pomer Hoit.
Given the long history of mining and exploration in the area, there are some pretty wild stories that took place far from town. Take the outlaws that narrowly escaped a posse that spotted their campfire on Horse Thief peak or the boom and bust tale which unfolded on Farwell Mountain - named after John Farwell who built an extensive but ill-fated water ditch to power his hydraulic mining operation.
Along the way, we've accumulated a few good stories of our own but we'll save those for some other time...
Black Diamond
Here at Black Diamond it's all about climbing and skiing. We share the same experiences that you do on rock, ice and snow and these experiences push us to make the best gear possible for our worldwide family of climbers and skiers.
What began with a backyard anvil and a hammer has grown into a global company with offices on three continents that's not just for rock climbers, but one that stands for the spirit of the sports we live, their values and goals, past, present and future. Since 1957, our innovative gear designs have set the standards in numerous areas. This is partly the result of dedication, desire and diligence on the part of an incredible team of people. It's also the result of each of us being climbers and skiers ourselves.
We're a company of users—it's who we are. We're the greatest dreamers about what could be, and the harshest of critics about what exists and because of this—the creation of Black Diamond is a process which will never end. The company today is more committed than ever, thanks to the many people here in the U.S., at Black Diamond Europe and at Black Diamond Asia whose limitless energy and hands-on involvement have created a promising future for all climbers and skiers worldwide.

Cascade Designs
Our Story
The year was 1971. Seattle aerospace giant, Boeing, announced its largest layoff in company history, resulting in 50,000 people losing their jobs. So devastating was the impact on the local population, that a now infamous billboard near the SeaTac airport read, “Will the last person leaving Seattle, please turn out the lights?”
Among the newly jobless were my good friends Jim Lea and Neil Anderson—both engineers who were eager to get back to work. Turning to me for ideas, I told them that as a mountain climber, I knew the world needed a better sleeping mattress. Air mattresses were cold and prone to leaking, while closed cell foam pads didn’t offer sufficient comfort. I wanted a mattress that was lightweight, warm and comfortable. Jim and Neil accepted the challenge.
One day while Jim was working in his yard, he noticed that the gardening cushion he was kneeling on expelled air as he shifted his weight. That’s when lightning struck. Jim realized that open-cell foam had memory. Excited about this discovery, he and Neil began working on a mattress prototype. Their plan was to take a piece of open-cell foam, like that in Jim’s gardening cushion, and sandwich it between two pieces of airtight fabric. Using an old sandwich maker, they melted the fabric onto the foam, creating a bond that was perfectly airtight. They added a valve, and their prototype was ready to test.
For months, we continued the process of testing, refining, and re-testing until we arrived at the perfect design. In 1972, Jim and Neil filed for a patent, and within two years we began production of Therm-a-Rest pads—the world’s first self-inflating mattress. Our collaboration produced a worldwide standard for outdoor sleeping comfort and a company – Cascade Designs, Inc.
Today, we’re fortunate to remain a private, family-owned company that has grown to be one of the most respected outdoor equipment manufacturers in the world. We’ve achieved that distinction through a combination of the Therm-a-Rest brand’s enduring popularity, the acquisition of strong companies with superior products and shared visions, and by sticking to the same fundamental principles we were founded upon: providing relevant and innovative products, exceptional quality, and service that exceeds your expectations.
In the pursuit of quality, I believe that the strength of our products is a key to the success of our brands and that whenever possible, we should manufacture what we sell. Though much of the world’s manufacturing has shifted from North American and Europe to Asia, we still build the vast majority of our products in our facilities in Seattle, USA and Cork, Ireland. This allows us to retain control over the quality and availability of what we sell, to distribute regionally, thereby minimizing wasteful shipping, and to keep jobs here at home. Because of this priority, dedicated people show
up every day to make sure we continue to fulfill our promise of superior innovation, quality and service.

One of our Seattle, U.S.A., manufacturing facilities.
Looking forward, I see our future success assured by continuing to do what Jim, Neil and I set out to do nearly 40 years ago—create innovative, quality solutions to real-world needs by listening to you. With your needs to guide us, our strong engineering, testing and manufacturing team comprised of avid outdoors people will continue our legacy of providing you with the most innovative, useful and long-lasting products, made in the most environmentally responsible means possible.
I am humbled with what we have been able to accomplish over the years and that our products have been an integral part of the outdoor experience for so many people around the world. Though we face many levels of uncertainty in these challenging times, we are all lucky enough to have those experiences—and many more to come—to ground us and give us perspective on what’s truly important. I encourage you to remember the restorative powers of the outdoors, to seek them as often as possible and to spread the word. And whether you get out once a week or once a year, try us out. I’m confident you’ll find that the lasting value of quality products will make your experiences even better.
—John Burroughs, company co-founder and chief product tester

DOOIT Activity Trailers
The DOOIT is the economical and flexible solution for the single small car owner who wants to have good fuel economy and still take their
weekend activity equipment with them. It is an efficiently designed small very sturdy trailer with a portfolio of attachments each designed to securely hold specific types of activity equipment. Camping gear, bikes, small kayaks or canoes etc., all can be mounted on the trailer and hauled with ease to and from the destination. The equipment is hauled behind the vehicle so there is improved fuel economy versus roof mounting, causing less drag and saving as much as 2-3 mpg. The DOOIT can be stored on end in the typical garage, its small size makes it easy to maneuver, and maybe best of all, it is simple to load and unload. Ladders are no longer needed to load and unload the car top.

Jetboil
It all started in 2001 with a simple but powerful idea. Frustrated with heavy vacuum bottles and clunky stoves, Jetboil founders Dwight Aspinwall and Perry Dowst set out to make outdoor cooking easier.
They discovered that the secret to a fast and friendly design lies in increasing heat transfer efficiency. Alternating between lab and mountains, a series of designs were subjected to intense experimental and field testing. The result is a series of products as reliable as they are remarkable; as usable as they are unique.
Kokatat
About Kokatat
In 1971, outdoor enthusiast and retailer Steve O’Meara decided to start making gear to support his habit of getting outside into the spectacular landscape that is Northern California: Redwoods, rivers, mountains and the sea. Some might call that heaven, most call it Humboldt County. We’re inclined to think they’re one and the same.
Following the introduction of a new waterproof fabric called GORE-TEX®, Steve decided to focus his company on one category of products: paddlesports apparel and gear. The company evolved to what we know today as “Kokatat”, a regional Native American word for “Into the Water”. Highly appropriate since Kokatat garments are meant for total immersion. Go ahead, pull that gasket over your head and be sure to zip that relief zipper all the way closed before you jump in.
40 years later Kokatat still thrives in Arcata, CA. You can walk in the front door of the factory and hear the hum of sewing machines, bringing you the most complete line of paddling apparel and personal flotation devices (PFDs) available. Adam in design can tell you about last week’s killer surf or you can chat with Matt in marketing about the CFS last weekend on the Trinity River. You can even talk to one of our gear artisans about the finer intricacies of waterproof seam taping, if you’re into that sort of thing. Have a GORE-TEX® drysuit from the late twentieth century? Chris in our repair department will test it for leaks and refurbish it for you.
We strive to make the most comfortable, durable, and safe products possible at Kokatat. From our GORE-TEX® dry suits that carry a lifetime warranty or rescue PFDs worn by guides worldwide, to a new paddler’s first splash-top, we have you covered. Safety is the key for our paddle sports customers and for the Military, Search and Rescue, and US Coast Guard units we outfit. The water can be unpredictable at times. It’s our goal to remove the worries of the elements so you can head out with confidence.
40 years into the business, we remain committed to manufacturing the majority of our gear in Humboldt County. Named the 2010 Arcata Green Business of the Year, our company provides an established platform of green practices, social equity and economic vitality to the region. Our recent installation of one of the largest solar photovoltaic systems in the region powers much of our factory.
Over the years we have built a strong family of employees and loyal business partners. It’s the people that make our work so much fun. Oh yeah… the water too!

Ledge
LEDGE OUTDOORS
The fist models of Ledge sleeping bags saw over 10,000 nights of wilderness use before they became available to the public. As a company, we not only pride ourselves
on our designs, but on the fact that we test our desigis. We create products and we use them to ensure their perfomance. Ledge bags continually evolve. If there is a way
to make them better or more attractive in design, style, and function, we do it. Some companies leave the same designs ‘on the shelf' for years but you won't find that
complacency with Ledge. You will find forward-thinking that gets implemented in a superior product season after season.

Liquidlogic Kayaks
Starting out as a dream on the banks of Western North Carolina’s Green River Narrows in 1999, Liquidlogic came into being in an old farmhouse in Flat Rock, NC in 2001. Now, having teamed up with Legacy Paddlesports in Greensboro, we work out of an active and once dusty shop (we finally installed some quality ventilation) just miles from the road down to the put-in of the Green River.
Enter the front door, take a left, and meet Chris Oblinger (aka Obie). Between days on the Green and evenings on his mountain bike, Obie works as the head of customer service and will always greet you with genuine interest and comical jest. Walk down the hall and notice penciled sketches and designs of numerous kayaks scattered on the desk. Listen closely and you’ll hear bluegrass blaring from the shop, inviting you in to a world of craftsmanship. Open the door and find Shane Benedict, a designer since 1994, shaping his new dynamic playboat. Shane, who ranks at the top of the world’s veteran playboaters, is a champion clogger, and can field strip a chicken wing in 2 seconds flat, looks up and gives you a natural, friendly grin. Having kayaked since 1979, Shane was a 10-year US Freestyle Team Member, two-time World Freestyle medalist, and highly acclaimed instructor for NOC. You are also aware of a presence meandering in and out of offices, editing posters, refining catalogs, advising on boat designs, and making everyone around him laugh. Meet Woody Calloway, paddling legend and Liquidlogic’s Lifestyle Maintenance Technician (we are not that big on titles here). Since 1982, Woody has spent his time on rivers, chatting with any friendly passers-by at the take-out, pushing limits on creeks, creating squirt boating moves, and endlessly promoting the sport of whitewater kayaking (he has won his share of parties too).
Jumping out of his black pick-up truck, Bryon Phillips walks in through the garage-style door of the shop. Bryon, a true veteran of the sport, learned how to paddle in a squirt boat in the middle of Colorado winters. Immediately hooked, Bryon went on to develop Sinn Kayaks with his brother and is now the head of design for Liquidlogic and all of Legacy Paddlesports.
All of us are fun, hard-working individuals who know what it means to spend a day on the river. And with the recent merger with Legacy Paddlesports, our family has only become stronger. We now manufacture out of a state-of-the-art, temperature-controlled factory which provides unparalleled consistency in molding. Combine a production environment unequaled in the paddlesports industry with the most experienced team in the business, and it’s clear how Liquidlogic & Legacy have quickly become world wide brands with distribution centers in Europe, New Zealand, Japan, and Russia. Even so, we at Liquidlogic have kept our family as close-knit, strong, and as thriving as ever. With our headquarters just miles from world-class rapids like Gorilla, Sunshine, and Hammer Factor, we consistently push ourselves to create solid, responsive, and innovative kayaks. We make it our goal every day to provide you with the safest, most reliable, and dynamic kayaks on the market. We test every piece as if our very own lives depended on it; we demand high quality; we accept nothing less. With over 100 years of combined paddling experience, Liquidlogic is a unique family of visionary craftsmen, world-class athletes, and industry veterans who know that the difference between good and great kayaks can make or break the best of days. So venture on over to the Liquidlogic family and join us for a paddle on the Green!
Mad Rock
Mad Rock began in 2002 as a small, climber owned and operated company that made innovative, highly technical and affordable rock climbing shoes. After many years and over a million pairs later, we still choose not to reflect on our accomplishments nor rest on our laurels-because our best shoes will always be the next batch! To us, "Innovation" isn't just a catch phrase-it's a challenge to be met daily. In that spirit, we embrace using the latest materials and technology to meet consumer demands while maintaining the high quality and innovative products that have put us on the map and in the packs of climbers around the world.!
Refinement of an existing design can often be as labor intensive as creating an all-new one. Yet instead of making new models for the sake of making new models, for 2010 Mad Rock is committed to making subtle but definite running improvements to our existing shoe models and offering a variety of new features, colors and options to our increasingly popular hardware and accessory lines. Mad Rock's goal from the start has been to offer the most sophisticated designs and materials at a fair price, and now more than ever our message of value, quality, durability and climbing enjoyment rings true - so much so that our competitors are increasingly following our lead. We always thought that climbing should be enjoyed by everybody - and we aim to do that with the best gear at a fair price. For 2010 and beyond, Mad Rock is committed to offering you a great deal on the best equipment and back it up with the best customer service in the business.

NRS (Northwest River Supplies)
The NRS Legacy

Our Founder, Bill Parks
Established in 1972; 2000 Dollars, a Garage, and a Dream
In the early 70's Bill Parks had two passions: paddling and business. So with $2000 in savings, he started NRS (Northwest River Supplies). As well as an opportunity to provide fellow enthusiasts with products, this gave him the chance to prove his teaching wasn't just talk. To learn more about Bill Park's story read on...
I first fell in love with whitewater in the 1960's. As a business teacher, it was a natural step to combine my passion for paddling with my "day job": I could test some of my ideas about small business in the real world and go boating at the same time. In 1972, while on the faculty of the University of Oregon, I started NRS with an initial $2000 investment. Thanks to lots of luck and some hard work, NRS (which soon relocated to Moscow, Idaho) grew into a thriving business.
Today, we are still putting into practice my original, perhaps somewhat naive, belief that a business enterprise can provide purpose and enjoyment in our lives, rather than just a way of making money. At NRS, our purpose is to treat you, the customer, in the way we like to be treated. In many ways the company feels to us like a family, and we hope that you, too, get a bit of this feeling when doing business with us.
I've always been a budget boater, and NRS was founded to provide quality equipment without wiping out the wallet. We haven't lost that edge, although some people sometimes ask why we don't charge more for our products. The answer is simple: we didn't get into this business to get rich or to satisfy investors -- we're here because we love running rivers. You'll find our best efforts in your local paddling shop as well as in this catalog*.
See you on the water!
Bill Parks*If your paddling shop doesn't carry our products, please ask them to consider us -- or let us know, and we will send them information about NRS.
I really enjoyed the video tour of NRS on the newsletter. I had no idea NRS was so big! We thought it was a much smaller company mainly because of your customer service, which is better than any other company in any business I can think of! Your orders are shipped quickly, your return & repair policies are exceptional, and most of all your people on the phones. When you call NRS you talk to a person and not a machine. If you place an order on line, and there's a back order or hold up of some kind, your people will call on the telephone to let us now about the hold up. I've never experienced that with any company! My wife and I are in our late 50's and we started sea kayaking four years ago here in Wisconsin and on Lake Superior. Over the years we've probably bought the majority of our equipment from NRS. We have enjoyed your products, especially products manufactured by NRS or having the NRS label.
Thanks Bill and thanks to the NRS STAFF!

Sierra Club - Grand Canyon Chapter
The Sierra Club is one of the oldest and most influential grassroots environmental organizations in the United States. The Grand Canyon (Arizona) Chapter was formed in 1966 in order to focus attention on stopping dams in Grand Canyon. Our work to protect the Colorado River and Grand Canyon National Park continue today and have been joined by a number of programs to safeguard other areas and issues.
The Grand Canyon Chapter seeks to engage its members and the public in protecting our communities; public lands including national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges; rivers and streams; and wildlife; plus promote renewable energy and energy efficiency in order to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change; and support transit, bike and pedestrian friendly communities to reduce air pollution and energy use.
Stubai Bergsport-Mountaineering
Nature has long been the mother of invention in the Stubai Valley. For centuries the water flowing from the glaciers in the Stubai Alps has powered the hammers in our foundries. Today, those same amazing natural forces still provide our power as well as our inspiration.
Our team of expert climbers, guides and engineers are in constant communication, to share new ideas from mountain tours and to discuss improvements to our existing ranges.
Before we put any product on the market, our first task is to overcome all the emerging technical challenges. Any new equipment is then subjected to a thorough programme of rigorous testing. Only then is our equipment good enough for you.
Your satisfaction and opinion are both extremely important to us. You are a vital part of our chain, and we welcome any ideas and feedback that you might have about our products.
With best wishes for continued safe, enjoyable and rewarding adventures in the extraordinary world of mountains!
Yours

TESORO
by James Gifford

Factory located in Prescott, Arizona.
My name is James Gifford and my parents Jack and Myrna Gifford founded Tesoro Electronics over twenty years ago in our family garage, but the story of Tesoro really starts with Jack in the early 60's. At that time, Jack was working in retail sales, but he wanted to be part of the booming aerospace industry. So he went to school, worked hard, and eventually became an electronics technician. During one of his earlier jobs, Jack found a number of Electronics Engineers that were willing to share their knowledge, and he learned the skill that would guide his career for the next 35 years.

Jack, Myrna, James, & Vince Gifford
As we enter the future, Tesoro Electronics will remain in the hands of the Gifford family, and we will continue to produce the best possible metal detectors based on the words that Jack wrote over 25 years ago. "As the Spaniards were yesterday's undisputed masters of treasure hunting, we at TESORO will always endeavor to meet our goal of making TESORO Metal Detectors today's undisputed masters of treasure hunting."
