Desert Voyagers Staff and Crew
MARSHA BLUMM - Owner and Operator, Business Manager
Randy saw a "River Guides Wanted" flyer at ASU in 1994 and has been with Desert Voyagers for 12 years. He likes anything "outdoorsy" and spends his extra time with his family plus 2 dogs (vicious animals, as he calls the small mutts). Randy had the privilege of running whitewater rivers in the Adirondack Mountains before relocating to Arizona. He has been in the Army, and was a proud member of the New York Police Department as well as being a volunteer and paid EMT in New York. His sense of humor is right on and we have guides and clients alike requesting him to be on that next river run.
Born in Hawaii and raised in Arizona, Megan is a Wilderness First Responder and will have her Swift water Rescue certification soon. She's traveled to Australia and Fiji, where she decided she would always work in the outdoors field. This resulting in her recently completed Bachelor's Degree in Outdoor Recreation management from ASU. Megan does a variety of guiding around Arizona and the Southwest, as well as owning an outdoor survival and primitive skills school called Lost and Found Adventures. You're likely to see her on any good trail with her two dogs, Casey and Sadie
Alaskan born, North Dakota raised, Josh is always climbing. He loves to disappear for weeks into the Yosemite wilderness. While Josh never brags, his friends describe him as an "extremely dedicated climber" for all types of climbing and mountaineering. We also use him as our resident engineering genius as he can fix anything. He helps his brother up at a ranch in the Sierra Anchez Mountains during his free time and loves to guide and climb the rest of the time. Josh's dream would be able to not work and just climb all over the world. Who needs work, right?
A native Arizonan, Ty has an education background in wildlife biology and wildlife rehabilitation. His passion is herpetology (the study of reptiles and amphibians) and he's done documentary work for PBS, BBC, Oxford Scientific Film and The Discovery Channel. Ty has been rafting for 10 years, 5 years of that on whitewater. He has been with Desert Voyagers guiding for over 8 years. His energy is contagious and his never-ending wildlife knowledge astonishes even his coworkers.
Sean can't help being a cool guy. He's only in his mid twenties and already owns a side business selling outdoor gear called The Outer Edge. The business plans to expand into a rock climbing guide service named Arizona Rock Guides (with Josh klingbeil along as lead guide).. Sean's passion is reaching the ultimate vertical limit. This passion has lead to a number of near catastrophe-type stories that we can all laugh about now. Sean is certified in First Aid and CPR and has worked for Desert Voyagers for over 2 1/2 years.
Craig loves the outdoors and challenges himself by participating in Triathlons. He is Emt certified and has taken on a whole new life challenge as "daddy". We are sure this might just be the most challenging race yet! We know he will take it on with his usual vigor and preparation. Congratulations dad.
Jacob has been with Desert Voyagers for 2 years. His personality is very unique and very likeable as well. He has an overwhelming supply of knowledge regarding nature and ecosystems. He is always the first to spot bald eagles nesting in the trees along the river. He is always willing to tell you an interesting fact about a bird or plant. His positive attitude about life is refreshing
and his stories about odd ways of making money will keep you laugh for hours.
Dave Sas - Lead River Guide, Driver, Escort - WFA and SWRT
"Sas", as he's called, has been with Desert Voyagers since 1993. A Vietnam veteran with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor. Sas served for 100st Airborne Division, Long Range Reconnaissance. He has worked for Desert Voyagers in every possible capacity from driver to operations manager and continues to be one of our most versatile and trusted guides
Doug has had the distinctive opportunity to run whitewater around the world in places like Costa Rica, Wyoming, and Alaska. He's game for "anything outdoors" and is a bartender when he's not guiding rivers. Doug has been with Desert Voyagers for 6 years. He began his interest in rafting when he was only 10 years old. His unique stories will keep guests entertained for long past just the river float.
Huck is a Wilderness EMT for Southwest Ambulance and is working towards a degree in nursing His true passion in life is the ecology and wildlife of the Southwest and he uses this passion to inspire children and young adults at a primitive survival skills camp in Washington State each summer. Huck grew up in Colorado where he was certified as a Whitewater kayak guide on the Animus River. He also co-owns Lost and Found Adventures, a primitive skills and survival school.
Brett is a personable guide and also one of Arizona's brave and caring Firemen. Always a favorite with the groups and happy to point out the sights along the way. It's always comforting to know you have a fireman by your side!
Paul likes long walks on the beach and deep conversation. Since Arizona is all beach and no water it just isn't the same! Paul took the same love and converted it to long raft tours down the river and great conversations with his guests. He is a high school science teacher and in his spare time makes Native American flutes. Paul runs rivers all over the country. His favorite is the middle fork of the Salmon in Idaho. He's happily married (sorry ladies!) Paul has been with Desert Voyagers
almost 4 years and we hope he'll stay with us for much longer.
Frank is an ex-pilot and was in the Army. He enjoys guiding hikers and mountain bike tours on top of guiding the rivers of the southwest. He spends a lot of his free time in the Grand Canon at Havasupai, a beautiful sanctuary of waterfalls and native culture. Frank always has a sweet look for a "pretty lady" and never fails to get everyone laughing with his dry sense of humor and quick wit.
Stormdrain (don't ask) is a fairly new addition to the Desert Voyagers team. Don't worry, Stormdrain, the hazing is almost over! Nick is a physical therapist when
he's not enjoying a day on the river and will give any sore shoulders a massage if you ask. He is currently in training with Lost and Found Adventures to become a survival instructor and is moving up the ranks at Desert Voyagers as well. His positive attitude and upbeat personality keep guests and fellow guides requesting his presence on trips all year.
